A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-1-457 SO AS TO REQUIRE TEACHERS IN EACH PUBLIC SCHOOL IN THIS STATE TO CONDUCT, BEFORE THE OPENING OF THE FIRST PERIOD CLASS OF EACH SCHOOL DAY, AN ORAL RECITATION OF A CERTAIN EXCERPT FROM THE "DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE".

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-1-457. Teachers in each public school in this State shall conduct, before the opening of the first period class of each school day, an oral recitation of the following excerpt from the 'Declaration of Independence':

'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed'."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
