TO COMMEND SOUTH CAROLINA'S NURSES FOR THEIR INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE QUALITY OF OUR LIVES AND TO DESIGNATE THE WEEK OF MAY 6-12, 2002, AS "NURSES WEEK" IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, nurses are the backbone of our health care system and critical to the quality of care provided to thousands of South Carolina residents; and
Whereas, nurses provide a vast array of health care services across a broad spectrum of health care settings to meet the different and emerging health care needs of our state's population; and
Whereas, the demand for nursing services will be greater than ever because of the aging of the American population, the continuing expansion of life-sustaining technology, and the explosive growth of home health care services; and
Whereas, more nurses will be needed in the future to meet the increasingly complex needs of health care consumers in this State; and
Whereas, National Nurses Week begins May 6 and ends May 12, Florence Nightingale's birthday; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper that South Carolina's nurses should be recognized for their accomplishments, their countless sacrifices, and their worthy crusade to provide cost-effective, safe and quality health care services. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate commend South Carolina's nurses for their invaluable contributions to the quality of our lives and designate the week of May 6-12, 2002, as "Nurses Week" in South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the South Carolina Nurses Association.
