A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND THANK T. J. CROSS OF COLUMBIA FOR DONATING HIS TIME, TALENT, AND COMEDIAN'S TREASURE OF GOOD HUMOR IN SUPPORT OF THE COMMUNITY SERVICES BLOCK GRANT YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM AT GRADUATION CEREMONIES HELD AT THE YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM'S YEAR-END LUNCHEON, AND EXTEND EVERY GOOD WISH FOR HIS CONTINUED SUCCESS AS A COMEDIAN AND IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, a native South Carolinian, actor, and natural comedian, T. J. Cross is a soft-spoken and shy young man who stands in front of terrifying audiences night after night making people laugh. On Friday, May 10, 2002, Mr. Cross will share his time, talent, and considerable treasure of good humor and comic relief at the Community Services Block Grant Youth Leadership Program Year-end Luncheon, an event sponsored by the Office of the Governor, Office of Economic Opportunity; and

Whereas, T. J. Cross was first recognized last year by a Def-Jam comedian who spotted him in a talent show at West Charlotte High School. The Def-Jam comedian recognized his talent and took a chance on Cross by giving him two minutes on stage at the Comedy Zone in Charlotte. Two minutes on stage was all Cross needed to win over the crowd and launch a new career; and

Whereas, T. J. Cross did his first tour last summer in clubs in Charlotte. He recently won a comedy competition and will be performing at the Montreal Comedy Festival in Canada this year. Cross has performed in such hot spots as the Comedy Zone in Charlotte and the Uptown Comedy Corner in Atlanta. He currently performs at the Comedy Zone in Charlotte three times a week; and

Whereas, T. J. Cross lists "Gone in 60 Seconds", "Black Sheep", and "Showtime" as film credits to date, and has also appeared on the Tom Joyner Morning Show: It's Your World. As of now, Cross wants to pursue his career as a comedian and remarked, "I just want to continue to make people laugh and to learn more about the business"; and

Whereas, having agreed to be the speaker for the Youth Leadership Program graduation ceremony and donating his valuable time, T. J. Cross's immediate target for good humor and laughter is approximately two hundred Youth Program participants who will be recognized for their achievements at the Youth Leadership Program Year-end Luncheon. Approximately ten students will receive college stipends at this luncheon; and

Whereas, the Youth Leadership Program was established to identify, develop, and motivate new leadership in the State. The program provides services to low-income high school 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students in achieving social and economic self-sufficiency. The Fiscal Year 2002 program targets innovative activities and strategies in the areas of character building, educational achievement, life skills, and career opportunities. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, commend and congratulate T. J.
