A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE THE HONORABLE J. EDWARD DARNELL, SHERIFF OF BAMBERG COUNTY, ON BEING NAMED "SHERIFF OF THE YEAR" BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA SHERIFF'S ASSOCIATION AND WISH HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS IN THE FUTURE.

Whereas, the Honorable J. Edward Darnell, Sheriff of Bamberg County, was named "Sheriff of the Year" by the South Carolina Sheriffs' Association at its January 19, 2001, business meeting; and

Whereas, nominated to receive this prestigious recognition by Sheriff J.C. Gregg, Jr., of Florence County, Sheriff Darnell was praised for performing the duties of his elected office in a manner that reflects great honor upon him and upon the entire law enforcement community; and

Whereas, Sheriff Darnell has been the Sheriff of Bamberg County since 1978 and is the third longest serving Sheriff in the State. He has been very active in the South Carolina Sheriffs' Association and has held various other offices throughout his tenure as Sheriff of Bamberg County; and

Whereas, under his supervision, the Bamberg County Sheriff's Office has grown to a staff of twelve full time deputies and one investigator and justifiably boasts as having one of the lowest crime rates among counties of comparable size; and

Whereas, Sheriff Darnell has also implemented several new programs including a Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force that deals with narcotics and violent crime, an officer on staff committed to the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program, and a full time Victim's Advocate and juvenile officer; and

Whereas, Sheriff Darnell balances his work as Sheriff with his community involvement and his wife, four sons, and six grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives want to recognize Sheriff J. Edward Darnell for his devotion to law enforcement and public service and congratulate him on the occasion of his being named "Sheriff of the Year" by the South Carolina Sheriffs' Association. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives by this resolution, commend and congratulate the Honorable J. Edward Darnell, Sheriff of Bamberg County, on being named "Sheriff of the Year" by the South Carolina Sheriffs' Association and wish him continued success in the future.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable J. Edward Darnell, Sheriff of Bamberg County.
