A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND HONOR AUSTIN NEWMAN OF COLUMBIA, A SIXTH GRADE STUDENT AT CRAYTON MIDDLE SCHOOL, FOR BEING NAMED SOUTH CAROLINA'S TOP MIDDLE LEVEL STUDENT VOLUNTEER IN THE PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS FOR 2001, AND RECOGNIZE HIS OUTSTANDING RECORD OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE, PEER LEADERSHIP, AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT.

Whereas, Austin Newman of Columbia has achieved national recognition for exemplary volunteer service by being named South Carolina's top middle level student volunteer in the 2001 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program recognizing young people for outstanding community service; and

Whereas, this prestigious award is presented by the Prudential Insurance Company of America in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals to honor young volunteers across America who represent the best of America's youth and who are role models to their peers and communities; and

Whereas, Austin, a sixth grade student who was nominated for the honor by his school, Crayton Middle School, earned this award by starting a community service club when he was in the third grade that has undertaken a variety of volunteer projects. He recruited friends to join his club and they planned a variety of fundraising activities to help offset the costs of the projects his club undertook. They sponsored yard sales and sold homemade stationery and greeting cards. With the money raised, Austin and his club donated crayons to children in the local Ronald McDonald House, sent toothbrushes and toothpaste to poor Haitian children, donated money to a local animal shelter, and cleaned up a local neighborhood lake. Austin's club remains active and involved in other projects; and

Whereas, in May, Austin will be one of two South Carolina students to be honored in Washington, D. C. He will join the other states' honorees for several days of national recognition events which will culminate in ten students being named America's top youth volunteers for 2001. We wish Austin success in the national competition; and

Whereas, we recognize that the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality for American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of young people like Austin Newman who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate and honor Austin Newman of Columbia, a sixth grader at Crayton Middle School, for being named South Carolina's top middle level student volunteer in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for 2001 and recognize his outstanding record of volunteer service, leadership, and community spirit.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Austin Newman.
