A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND MR. RON SMITH OF SPARTANBURG FOR HIS SUCCESS AS AN OWNER AND OPERATOR OF HIS OWN BUSINESS AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON BEING THE RECIPIENT OF THE YEAR 2001 SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION SOUTH CAROLINA ENTREPRENEURIAL EXCELLENCE AWARD, PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION.

Whereas, Mr. Ron Smith, part owner of McMillan Smith & Partners Architects, has been named the recipient of the Year 2001 South Carolina Entrepreneurial Excellence Award, which is one of the statewide awards presented by the United States Small Business Administration (SBA); the award will officially be given to Mr. Smith at the 2001 SBA South Carolina Annual Awards Luncheon on May 16, 2001, in Greenville, South Carolina; and

Whereas, Ron Smith earned a degree in Design at Clemson University where he also played linebacker for the Tiger football team; he later played for the Denver Broncos before opening his own architectural business in Spartanburg in 1987; and

Whereas, Mr. Ron Smith became a partner of Mr. Les McMillan in 1992 and has since been involved in some of the South Carolina Upstate's biggest changes in the past fourteen years; McMillan Smith & Partners Architects has experienced tremendous growth in recent years in the process of becoming a full-service architectural and interior design firm with nineteen registered architects and sixty-eight staff members; and

Whereas, Mr. Smith's firm has completed more than four hundred projects, many of which have benefitted the Spartanburg area and have included work in the healthcare, educational, religious, financial, residential, and commercial market sectors; the firm has enjoyed so much success that it opened a second office in Greenville, is planning for another in Charleston, and recently moved its Spartanburg headquarters into an office in the downtown area; and

Whereas, the Small Business Entrepreneurial Excellence Award is presented to small business owners who score extremely high in the competition for the South Carolina Small Business Person of the Year Award; the contestants are judged on the basis of staying power, growth in number of employees, increase in sales, innovativeness of product or service, response to adversity, and contributions to the community; and

Whereas, Ron Smith has also worked to further the revitalization of the downtown Spartanburg area, in an effort to give back to the community which has helped him become a successful business owner and operator; and the General Assembly is proud to recognize him as one of the Palmetto State's favorite sons. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, commend Mr. Ron Smith of Spartanburg for his success as an owner and operator of his own business and congratulate him on being the recipient of the Year 2001 SBA South Carolina Entrepreneurial Excellence Award, presented by the United States Small Business Administration.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Ron Smith of Spartanburg.
