TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 58-9-245 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT TELEPHONE UTILITIES OR THEIR SUBSIDIARIES UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION WITHIN THEIR SERVICE AREAS MUST OFFER CUSTOMERS FOR A RENTAL FEE NOT TO EXCEED TEN DOLLARS A MONTH AS SET BY THE COMMISSION THE OPTION OF RENTING A CAR PHONE WHICH ONLY HAS THE CAPABILITY OF DIALING "911" OR ANOTHER COMPARABLE EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBER IN CASES OF EMERGENCY.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 58-9-245. Telephone utilities or their subsidiaries under the jurisdiction of the Public Service Commission within their service areas must offer customers for a rental fee not to exceed ten dollars a month as set by the commission the option of renting a car phone which only has the capability of dialing '911' or another comparable emergency phone number in cases of emergency."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
