A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS AND COMMENDATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO THE NAVY JUNIOR ROTC UNIT OF CHAPIN HIGH SCHOOL IN CHAPIN ON BEING NAMED THE BEST NAVY JUNIOR ROTC UNIT IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES, AND TO WISH THE UNIT CONTINUED SUCCESS AS IT COMPETES FOR THE HONOR OF BEING NAMED BEST UNIT IN THE NATION.

Whereas, Chapin High School in Lexington County has cause to be extremely proud of its Navy Junior ROTC unit; and

Whereas, the Navy Junior ROTC at Chapin High School is a self-motivated, spirited, student run organization which provides students with programs that stress patriotism, character, leadership, and academics; and

Whereas, its cadet corps attracts a variety of students including student government leaders, members of the championship SAT team, student athletes, band members, and special education students; and

Whereas, the Chapin ROTC has several unique teams, with over eighty-five percent of the cadets participating. For example, there is the Drum and Bugle Corps, the Drill Team, Orienteering Team, Field Team, Air Rifle Team, and Sailing Team, Aviation Team, Silent Drill Team, and Power Point Team; and

Whereas, the Chapin ROTC runs summer programs for shipboard orientation, leadership training, boot camp, and freshman orientation. The unit is active in many school and community service projects; and

Whereas, in the past five years, the Chapin ROTC has captured the attention of national and state officials. In 1997, it was named the Best New Unit in the Nation; in 1998, it was the CNET Award winner; in 1999 the unit was named best in the nation out of four hundred thirty-five units; last year the unit was voted number two in the nation; and this year, the Chapin Navy Junior ROTC is in contention again for best unit in the nation; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are extremely proud of the achievements and accomplishments of this motivated cadet corps. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, extend their congratulations and commendations to the Navy Junior ROTC Unit of Chapin High School in Chapin on being named the best Navy Junior ROTC unit in South Carolina and in the southeastern United States and wish the unit continued success as it competes for the honor of being named the best unit in the nation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Chapin Navy Junior ROTC leader, Colonel Buddy Slack.
