A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND ROBERT L. "RED" MCELVEEN OF LAKE CITY FOR HIS TIRELESS EFFORTS TO BETTER HIS COMMUNITY AND THIS STATE THROUGH HIS LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE, AND TO EXTEND THE SINCERE BEST WISHES OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO HIM AND HIS FAMILY UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AS MAGISTRATE FOR THE LAKE CITY DISTRICT IN FLORENCE COUNTY.

Whereas, Robert L. "Red" McElveen was appointed and qualified as Magistrate Judge for the Lake City District in Florence County in 1990 and has served in this position with great distinction; and

Whereas, Red McElveen was born in Hartsville, South Carolina on April 20, 1929, to Clemuel T. and Sally Mixon McElveen, along with his two brothers Thomas L. and Carlyle H. McElveen; and

Whereas, Red McElveen attended public schools in Hartsville and was the first to graduate from the twelfth grade in Hartsville High School; after graduation he attended Clemson University and the University of South Carolina, becoming a dedicated supporter of Gamecock Athletics; and

Whereas, Red McElveen has donned his garnet and black colors going on sixty years and has faithfully followed Gamecock teams around the country, witnessing both the shining moments as well as the darkest hours, all to demonstrate his unfailing loyalty for the Fighting Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Red and Felicia E. Brown exchanged their wedding vows on August 8, 1953, and are now the proud and loving parents of two daughters, Deborah McElveen Beard and Sharon L. McElveen; and

Whereas, Red and Felicia moved to Lake City, South Carolina shortly after they were married, where Red soon became actively involved in business and civic-oriented undertakings; in 1961 he founded McElveen Insurance and Real Estate Agency, which quickly became a vital part of the business community in Lake City, until 1995 when Red closed the agency's doors for the last time to pursue his other interests full time; and

Whereas, Red proudly served as President of the Lake City Board of Realtors, was a member and President of the Lake City Jaycees and the Lake City Lions Club; he is a Mason, a 32nd Degree Shriner, and was active for many years in the Lake City Civil Air Patrol; through his service and leadership, Red has demonstrated an unquestionable commitment to bettering the lives of others in his community; and

Whereas, Red McElveen is an active member of Lake City Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, many times a Deacon, and was instrumental in establishing the Valley Street Mission and Northside Chapel in Lake City; he also set up and continues to teach a weekly Sunday school class in the Lake City Country Club Pro Shop, proving that his faith extends beyond the church walls;

Whereas, Red McElveen is respected by his peers and has stood for integrity in both his private and professional lives; Red is a shining example how an ordinary man can accomplish extraordinary things through hard work, good business ethics, and a strong commitment to one's God, family, and profession; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are sad to learn that one of the State's most just and compassionate magistrates will be leaving the bench; however, the Members are proud to take this opportunity to recognize Red McElveen as one of the Palmetto State's favorite sons. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Robert L. "Red" McElveen of Lake City for his tireless efforts to better his community and this State through his leadership and service and extend the sincere best wishes of the House of Representatives to him and his family upon his retirement as Magistrate for the Lake City District in Florence County.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Robert L. "Red" McElveen of Lake City.
