A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND IRMO MIDDLE SCHOOL IN LEXINGTON COUNTY FOR ITS EXCELLENT BAND PROGRAM WHICH HAS NOW CULMINATED IN THE SCHOOL AND ITS HONOR BAND BEING THE SOLE RECIPIENT OF THE SUDLER CUP FOR THE YEAR 2000 AND TO RECOGNIZE THAT THE SUDLER CUP IS THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL AWARD RECOGNIZING JUNIOR HIGH AND MIDDLE SCHOOL CONCERT BANDS OF OUTSTANDING MUSICAL EXCELLENCE.

Whereas, Irmo Middle School of School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties has been recognized by the John Philip Sousa Foundation for the year 2000 as the one middle school in the nation to meet the high standards of excellence in concert activities over a period of several years. This foundation awarded Irmo Middle School the prestigious Sudler Cup; and

The band must have performed at significant regional, state, national, and professional meetings. Student band members must have participated in regional and all-state honor bands; and

Whereas, Irmo Middle School excelled at all the criteria. Over the past seven years, the concert band has performed in many states. Its students have been selected for all-state and regional bands. Band Director David Woodard has led the Irmo Middle School concert band to higher levels of excellence than it ever attained previously. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commends Irmo Middle School in Lexington County for its excellent band program which has now culminated in the school and its honor band being the sole recipient of the Sudler Cup for the year 2000 and to recognize that the Sudler Cup is the most prestigious award recognizing junior high and middle school concert bands of outstanding musical excellence.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to David Woodard, band director of Irmo Middle School.
