A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND HONOR AUSTIN NEWMAN OF COLUMBIA, A SIXTH GRADE STUDENT AT CRAYTON MIDDLE SCHOOL, UPON BEING NAMED TOP MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT VOLUNTEER FOR SOUTH CAROLINA IN THE PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS PROGRAM AND RECOGNIZE HIS OUTSTANDING RECORD OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE, PEER LEADERSHIP, AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT.

Whereas, Austin Newman of Columbia, a sixth grade student at Crayton Middle School, has achieved national recognition for exemplary volunteer service upon being named top middle school student volunteer for South Carolina in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program; and

Whereas, for winning this award, Austin Newman received one thousand dollars, an engraved silver medallion, and a trip to Washington, D. C., in May, for a series of national recognition events. In addition, he will compete along with middle school winners in the other forty-nine states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia in the national competition; and

Whereas, this prestigious award, presented by the Prudential Insurance Company of America in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities; and

Whereas, he earned this award by giving generously of his time and energy in many different endeavors. He started a community service club when he was in the third grade that has undertaken a variety of volunteer projects. They sponsored yard sales and sold homemade stationery and greeting cards to raise more than four hundred dollars. Austin and his friends then donated crayons to kids in the local Ronald McDonald House, sent toothbrushes and toothpaste to poor Haitian children, made a donation to a local animal shelter, and cleaned up a neighborhood lake; and

Whereas, the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality for American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of young people like Austin Newman who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate and honor Austin Newman of Columbia, a sixth grade student at Crayton Middle School, upon being named top middle school student volunteer for South Carolina in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program and recognize his outstanding record of volunteer service, peer leadership, and community spirit.
