EXPRESSING THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO MR. LOMAS GIST, SR. OF COLUMBIA ON THE OCCASION OF HIS UPCOMING EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY AND WISHING FOR HIM MANY HAPPY AND HEALTHY RETURNS OF THE DAY.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note that Mr. Lomas Gist, Sr. of Columbia will celebrate his eightieth birthday on January 12; and
Whereas, Mr. Lomas Gist, Sr. was born in Union, but as a child moved with his family to Columbia in 1927, where he attended Waverly Elementary School and graduated from Booker T. Washington. Subsequently, he attended South Carolina State College and is a graduate of Denmark Area Trade School with an Industrial Education Degree; and
Whereas, Mr. Gist was employed by the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1979 after thirty years of service. During his career with the Postal Service, he served as a mail handler, general mechanic, and area maintenance technician. In recognition of his leadership qualities, his Postal Service colleagues elected him to serve as President of the Columbia Mail Handlers Union and the Maintenance Union. Additionally, he served as regional representative and representative for the United States Postal Service on the Equal Opportunity Committee. During his career, he was the recipient for awards for his suggestions improving working conditions and he also received the Safe Driving Award; and
Whereas, Richland County Council, in recognition of his commitment to community service, appointed him to serve as the COATS Committee for Richland and Lexington Counties. He currently is a charter member of the North Columbia Civic Club, President of the Fairwold Precinct, is a member of the Transportation Committee for House District 73, and is a long-time member of the NAACP; and
Whereas, Mr. Gist has been extremely active in Masonic Lodge activities as past Master of Corenthian Lodge #11, Past Commander in Chief of C. C. Johnson Consistory #136, Past Potentate of Cairo Temple #125, Past Deputy of the Oasis of Columbia, Past Overseer of the Rites in South Carolina for the 32nd and 33rd Degree Masons, and past Worthy Patron of Queen Esther Chapter #1 Order of the Eastern Star. He was elected to the position of the Most Worshipful Grand Master (1975-1979) of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of South Carolina; and
Whereas, Mr. Gist is married to Mary King Gist, and he is dedicated to his wife and family. They are the proud parents of two children, Lomas Gist, Jr. of Columbia and Patricia Gist Coleman of Charleston. They have five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He and his wife celebrated fifty-six years of marriage in July 1997; and
Whereas, Mr. Gist is employed as a bailiff at the Richland County Judicial Center in Columbia and also serves as President of the House District 73 Development Council; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they might note this eightieth birthday milestone in the life of so distinguished a son of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, express their congratulations to Mr. Lomas Gist, Sr. of Columbia on the occasion of his eightieth birthday on January 12, 2002, and wish for him many happy and healthy returns of the day.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Lomas Gist, Sr.
