TO COMMEND HANAHAN MIDDLE SCHOOL'S EIGHTH GRADE CLASS FOR ITS GENEROSITY OF SPIRIT, COMPASSION, AND CONCERN THROUGH ITS "SANTAS FROM THE SOUTH" OUTREACH TO THE FAMILIES OF FIREFIGHTERS FROM LADDER COMPANY 118 IN NEW YORK CITY WHO PERISHED IN THE SEPTEMBER 11 ASSAULT ON THE WORLD TRADE CENTER.
Whereas, from the tragic, horrifying events of September 11, 2001, a renewed sense of community and caring has emerged across this country; and
Whereas, no better example of this heightened concern and caring for our neighbors, both near and far, can be found than that which sprang from the hearts of Hanahan Middle School eighth graders; and
Whereas, through the passion and guidance of eighth grade teacher Carolyn Stewart and her desire to evoke a positive response to the tragedy of September 11, the Hanahan Middle School eighth grade class launched "Santas from the South"; and
Whereas, the class adopted the families of the eight firefighters from Ladder Company 118 in New York City who perished in the attack on the World Trade Center; and
Whereas, the students developed a wish list program to purchase gifts for the families and created a special memorial gift for the fire station; and
Whereas, the entire school, which had shared its concern and goodwill by collecting "Pennies for Patriots" and contributing to the Governor's South Carolina Cares fund, also generously contributed to "Santas from the South" by collecting canned goods and coats and donating money; and
Whereas, the Hanahan eighth grade class, their teacher, Carolyn Stewart, and the entire middle school, its administration, teachers, and staff have brought great pride and recognition to their community and to the State of South Carolina, and the General Assembly is pleased to acknowledge this school, its administration, students, and staff for turning the tragic events of September 11 into an extraordinary experience of giving and growth. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, commend Hanahan Middle School's eighth grade class for its generosity of spirit, compassion, and concern through its "Santas from the South" outreach to the families of firefighters from Ladder Company 118 who perished in the September 11 assault on the World Trade Center.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Carolyn Stewart and the eighth grade class of Hanahan Middle School.
