TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON LEARNING OF THE DEATH OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL JEFFERSON M. DAVIS, UNITED STATES ARMY, RETIRED, OF SUMMERTON, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the death of Lieutenant Colonel Jefferson M. Davis, United States Army, Retired, who died at age 73 at his home in Summerton, South Carolina, on Thursday, March 7, 2002; and

Whereas, Jefferson M. Davis was born in Summerton, South Carolina on May 11, 1928, the son of the late Washington B. and Ida Morrison Davis; and

Whereas, Jefferson M. Davis graduated from the Citadel in 1950. He entered the United States Army after graduation and thereafter rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His military career spanned twenty-two years of distinguished service as a commissioned officer in the Army and Army Security Agency, and included a combat tour during the Korean Conflict; and

Whereas, after retiring from the Army, Lieutenant Colonel Davis returned home to Summerton and established the Davis Insurance Agency. In addition to his insurance business, Lieutenant Colonel Davis also served the citizens of his community for twenty-two years as an active volunteer fireman; and

Whereas, a recognized leader in his community, Lieutenant Colonel Jefferson Davis served sixteen years as a magistrate and judge, working hard in that capacity to provide equal justice and fair treatment to the citizens of Manning and the surrounding area; and

Whereas, Lieutenant Colonel Davis will be remembered by all who knew him as a devoted and active member of the Summerton United Methodist Church, where he faithfully labored, loved, worshiped, and served his Lord and his fellow man for many years; and

Whereas, Lieutenant Colonel Davis is survived by Faith Gibson Davis, his wife of fifty years, his son, Michael F. Davis and daughter-in-law, Cynthia, his brother, H. Morrison Davis, and his sister, May Davis Tindal, along with numerous nieces and nephews; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives pause to remember the life, leadership, and public service of Lieutenant Colonel Davis and know that his memory will be forever cherished by those whose lives he touched. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon learning of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Jefferson M. Davis, United States Army, Retired, of Summerton, and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Faith Gibson Davis of Summerton, South Carolina.
