A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF MRS. JUANITA HARRISON GIVENS OF CHARLESTON COUNTY AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the recent death of Mrs. Juanita Harrison Givens of Charleston County; and

Whereas, Mrs. Givens was born in McCormick County on December 1, 1938, the daughter of Mr. Thomas Harrison and Mrs. Sally Bennet Harrison; and

Whereas, she was a graduate of McCormick High School, the American Banking Institute, and attended Trident Technical College; and

Whereas, on June 2, 1962, Mrs. Givens married The Reverend Dr. Willie E. Givens, Jr., and together they raised four children; and

Whereas, she devoted her life to both religious and civic affairs having served as a member of the Women's Auxiliary to the National Baptist Convention (USA), Corresponding Secretary of the Women's Baptist Convention of South Carolina, Immediate Past President of the Baptist Ministers Wives Alliance of Charleston and Vicinity; and

Whereas, Mrs. Givens was a faithful member of First Missionary Baptist Church in Summerville, South Carolina, where she served as President of the Missionary Ministry, Advisor to the Mass Choir, and Advisor to the Young Adult and Youth Ministries; and

Whereas, she was the recipient of numerous awards which included: recognition by the South Carolina Baptist Brotherhood for stellar contributions to education in 1982; First Missionary Baptist Church's 1983 Mother of the Year; and Morris College's President's Award in 1990; and

Whereas, Mrs. Givens was a dedicated employee of Wachovia Bank for thirty-one years serving as a loan administrator; and

Whereas, she was affectionately called "First Lady" because she was First Lady of First Missionary Baptist Church and First Lady of the Baptist E & M Convention from May 1996 to May 2001; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, extend their deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Given's devoted husband of forty years, Dr. Givens, their four children, Edwin, Darrell, Dexter, and Sharon, and her other family members and friends upon their loss. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives express their profound sorrow upon the death of Mrs. Juanita Harrison Givens of Charleston County, one of the most dedicated leaders in her community, and extend their deepest sympathy to her family and friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Givens.
