A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND DAVID BEIHL, STATE GEOGRAPHY BEE CHAMPION FOR 1998 AND 1999, AND NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY BEE CHAMPION FOR 1999, THOMAS BEIHL, STATE GEOGRAPHY BEE CHAMPION FOR 2001, AND DEBBIE BEIHL, STATE GEOGRAPHY BEE CHAMPION FOR 2002, ALL OF WHOM ARE HOME SCHOOLED CHILDREN OF PENNY AND GARY BEIHL OF SALUDA, AND TO CONGRATULATE EACH OF THEM FOR WINNING THEIR RESPECTIVE GEOGRAPHY BEE CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Whereas, in response to concerns about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States, the National Geographic Society developed the National Geography Bee; and

Whereas, the state Bees are the second level of the National Geographic Bee with contests in nearly eighteen thousand schools throughout the United States; and

Whereas, David Beihl, age 17, has just completed the eleventh grade and was the State Geography Bee Champion for 1998 and 1999, and was also the National Geography Bee Champion for 1999; and

Whereas, Thomas Beihl, age 14, has just completed the ninth grade and was the State Geography Bee Champion for 2001; and

Whereas, Debbie Beihl, age 12, has just completed the seventh grade and is the State Geography Bee Champion for 2002; and

Whereas, David, Thomas, and Debbie Beihl are the children of Penny and Gary Beihl of Saluda, and are all home schooled by their justifiably proud parents; and

Whereas, people, economies, and cultures are interconnected in the modern world in such a way that there is a real need for geographic literacy among our young men and women and having won State and National Geography Bee Championships, David, Thomas, and Debbie Beihl and their parents are a source of genuine pride to all South Carolinians. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend David Beihl, State Geography Bee Champion for 1998 and 1999, and National Geography Bee Champion for 1999, Thomas Beihl, State Geography Bee Champion for 2001, and Debbie Beihl, State Geography Bee Champion for 2002, all of whom are home schooled children of Penny and Gary Beihl of Saluda, and congratulate each of them for winning their respective geography bee championships.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be presented to David, Thomas, and Debbie Beihl of Saluda.
