A HOUSE RESOLUTION

COMMENDING THE DOUBLE DUTCH FORCES OF THE CITY OF COLUMBIA ON WINNING THE 2002 SOUTH CAROLINA DOUBLE DUTCH TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP, AND WISHING THEM WELL AS THEY COMPETE FOR THE 2002 AMERICAN DOUBLE DUTCH LEAGUE WORLD INVITATIONAL DOUBLE DUTCH CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, since 1985 the Double Dutch Forces of the City of Columbia have won forty-seven world titles, forty-two second place world titles, and one hundred sixty-seven state titles in double dutch competition; and

Whereas, they hold both the 2000 and 2001 state and world titles and were the 1997 AAU Junior Olympic Champions; and

Whereas, the Double Dutch Forces have successfully competed against teams from France, Japan, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Canada, as well as teams from across this country and other teams from around the globe; and

Whereas, the Double Dutch Forces hold the world record in the two minute speed competition; and

Whereas, they are known nationally as well as internationally with performances: at the 1996 Olympic Games and on ESPN, the Discovery Channel, the Nickelodean Channel, the British Broadcasting Channel, the Jenny Jones Show, and Radio Disney; and

Whereas, the Double Dutch Forces have been featured in The Sports Illustrated for Kids TV Show and magazine, Essence Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post; and

Whereas, they have performed at Walt Disney World, Carowinds, NBA games, WNBA games, during numerous college basketball half-times, and the Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Championship Tournament; and

Whereas, in 1994 the Double Dutch Forces completed a friendship tour with the Canadian Double Dutchers and their parents; and

Whereas, the team consists of more than eighty-five boys and girls ranging from the age of two through the age of twenty-three and have been coached for the past fifteen years by Joy Holman, Mike Peterson, and numerous parent volunteers; and

Whereas, from June 13 through June 15, 2002, the Double Dutch Forces will defend their world double dutch title during the Twenty-Ninth Annual American Double Dutch League World Invitational Double Dutch Championship which will be held in the City of Sumter; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend the Double Dutch Forces for serving as both national and international ambassadors for the State of South Carolina for more than sixteen years and wish them much success as they defend their world title. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina commend the Double Dutch Forces of the City of Columbia on winning the 2002 South Carolina Double Dutch Tournament Championship, and wish them well as they compete for the 2002 American Double Dutch League World Invitational Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Ms. Joy Holman and Mr. Mike Peterson on behalf of the Double Dutch Forces.
