A SENATE RESOLUTION

SALUTING R. L. "LOUIE" SPINELLI OF NEW JERSEY, NATIONAL COMMANDER, MILITARY ORDER OF THE PURPLE HEART, AND COMMENDING HIM FOR HIS TIRELESS SERVICE AND OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE VETERANS OF THIS COUNTRY AND EXTENDING TO HIM A HEARTY WELCOME TO SOUTH CAROLINA FOR THE CELEBRATION OF "PURPLE HEART DAY".

Whereas, R. L. "Louie" Spinelli of New Jersey was elected National Commander, Military Order of the Purple Heart, in 2001; and

Whereas, Commander Spinelli enlisted in the United States Army as an infantry soldier in 1951 at the age of seventeen; following recruit training and infantry training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he was assigned to Korea and wounded on Heartbreak Ridge in October 1951; he was medically evacuated to the United States and, following seven months of hospitalization recovering from his wounds, he was medically retired from the Army at the age of eighteen; and

Whereas, he joined the Military Order of the Purple Heart in 1987; since that time he has been a volunteer serving as a Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) representative and in numerous committee assignments; he was elected to commander offices at the chapter, department (state), region, and national levels; in 1994, he was appointed to the Department of Veterans Affairs, New Jersey/New York Network Management Assistance Council (State Holders Committee), while simultaneously serving a second term as Department Commander from 1996 to 1997; he has achieved over 3,500 hours of voluntary service with the Department of Veterans Affairs; and

Whereas, Commander Spinelli was elected National Junior Vice Commander in 1999, Senior Vice Commander in 2000, and National Commander, Military Order of the Purple Heart, on August 18, 2001, at the Order's 69th Annual National Convention; and

Whereas, Commander Spinelli's military awards include the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Medal, United Nations Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation; and

Whereas, this outstanding former soldier will be in South Carolina on February 16, 2002, for the celebration of "Purple Heart Day"; we are delighted to have him visit the Palmetto State and to have the opportunity to recognize him for his outstanding accomplishments and to thank him for all of his excellent service. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, salute R. L. "Louie" Spinelli of New Jersey, National Commander, Military Order of the Purple Heart, and commend him for his tireless service and outstanding contributions to the veterans of this country and extend to him a hearty welcome to South Carolina for the celebration of "Purple Heart Day".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Commander Spinelli.
