VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND TO CELEBRATE A LIFE OF SERVICE UPON THE DEATH OF SHIRLEY "SAM" MCDONALD OF TEGA CAY WHO PASSED AWAY MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2003, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER LOVING FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the death of Shirley "Sam" McDonald on Monday, February 10, 2003; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives would like to express their warmest gratitude and most sincere appreciation for the life of a woman who was wholly dedicated to the service of her loved ones, her friends, and her community; and
Whereas, Mrs. McDonald was born and raised in Port Clinton, Ohio, and was the daughter of "Jack" Riddle and Katherine Schneider Riddle, from whom she learned the value and importance of serving and giving. Her father was a volunteer fireman in Port Clinton and her soon-to-be husband was the manager of the town pharmacy; and
Whereas, after Mrs. McDonald moved to Tega Cay in 1979 she became immediately involved in the tight-knit, lakeside community. She demonstrated her selflessness in the adoption of her nickname, Sam, because there were already several ladies in the ladies golf club with the name of Shirley; and
Whereas, elected mayor of Tega Cay in 1988, she was able to resolutely lead the city through its most difficult time, the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo, because of her internal fortitude, respect from the community, seemingly infinite vigor, and her ability to laugh in any situation; and
Whereas, her zeal and positive attitude are evidenced by her volunteer service on a myriad of committees and councils including the Emergency Management Committee, the Volunteer Fire Department, and many others. She poured her skills, time, and energy into The Tradewinds, the monthly newsletter of the Tega Cay Property Owners Association, as a manifestation of her belief in the power of a strong, friendly, involved, volunteer-oriented community, a paradigm which she beautifully exemplified; and
Whereas, Mrs. McDonald was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church where she would freely and lovingly give advice to all who sought her benevolent wisdom; and
Whereas, she believed in the power of learning, education, and family as seen by the priority she placed on reading to her grandchildren every Friday night; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives extends its sympathy to the family and many friends of Shirley "Sam" McDonald, and offers sincere thanks and heartfelt joy at the life of service and love which she lived. As the oak tree planted in her honor exemplifies strength, longevity, and resolve, so she, despite her small physical stature, represents these things to the loving community of Tega Cay, who will miss her greatly; greatly missed, but never forgotten. She is survived by her husband, Donald E. McDonald; three sons, Martin McDonald, William McDonald, and Matthew McDonald; and three grandchildren. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow and deepest gratitude for her life of service upon the death of Shirley "Sam" McDonald of Tega Cay, who passed away Monday, February 10, 2003, and extend deepest sympathy to her loving family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a framed copy of this resolution be prominently displayed in the Tega Cay City Hall and a copy of this resolution be forwarded to her husband, Mr. Donald E. McDonald of Tega Cay.
