A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE GAFFNEY HIGH SCHOOL "INDIANS" BOYS' VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM ON COMPLETING THE SCHOOL'S FIRST UNDEFEATED SEASON AND WINNING THE 2003 CLASS AAAA STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP, TO COMMEND THESE FINE ATHLETES AND THEIR COACHES FOR THE HARD WORK, TREMENDOUS SPIRIT, AND TEAMWORK THAT MOLDED THE GAFFNEY "INDIANS" INTO AN UNDEFEATED CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM, AND TO WISH THEM EVERY SUCCESS IN THEIR ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC CAREERS AND IN ALL OF THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, playing in the spacious Carolina Center in Columbia for the first time, the Gaffney High School Indians boys' varsity basketball team completed the school's first undefeated season with a convincing 79 - 66 victory to win the Class AAAA state basketball championship on Friday, March 7, 2003; and

Whereas, an undefeated season crowned by a state championship isn't something that happens very often. However, the Gaffney "Indians" put on a brilliant performance all season, chalked up victory after victory in league play, and finished their season with a perfect 28 - 0 record to capture the school's first state title since 1949, and it seemed that most of Gaffney was there to watch; and

Whereas, matched against the Dutch Fork Silver Foxes in the game for the championship, the "Indians" rose to the occasion. Dutch Fork hit the game's first basket before Gaffney tied the game and then took the lead for good with a 3-pointer on their next possession. As expected, individual "Indian" players turned in outstanding performances. Also as expected, the "Indians" got key contributions from every player on its roster. The result was rare but real, a perfect undefeated season crowned by the state AAAA basketball championship; and

Whereas, exhibiting the very best in hard work, tremendous spirit, and teamwork all season, the Gaffney High School "Indians" 2003 varsity boys' basketball team includes: Seniors, Phillip McHam, Quinton Curtis, Cliff Mayes, Curt Humphries; Juniors, Sidney Rice, Chaucey Adams, AZ Reid, and Carnell Wilkerson; Sophomores, Donald Sims and Phillip Buckson; and Freshmen, Nick Melton and Julius Wilkerson. This championship team was superbly trained and coached by Head Coach Mark Huff and Assistant Coach Mark Ireton; and

Whereas, Superintendent Dr. William James, Principal Quincie Moore, the faculty, staff, and student body of Gaffney High School, and the parents and loyal fans of the "Indians" all contributed to this overwhelmingly successful basketball season that led to the 2003 State Class AAAA basketball championship. The contributions, achievements, competitive spirit, and sportsmanship of the players and all concerned are a source of pride to all South Carolinians; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to take this opportunity to commend and congratulate the outstanding 2003 Gaffney High School "Indians" basketball team for their undefeated championship performance, and commend them for their good example to others and a job well done. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate the Gaffney High School "Indians" boys' varsity basketball team on completing the school's first undefeated season and winning the 2003 class AAAA state basketball championship, commend these fine athletes and their coaches for the hard work, tremendous spirit, and teamwork that molded the Gaffney "Indians" into an undefeated championship team, and wish them every success in their academic and athletic careers and in all of their future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that, on behalf of the undefeated Gaffney High School "Indians" Boys' State AAAA Championship Basketball Team, a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coach Mark Huff of Gaffney.
