TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF COLONEL LOGAN E. WESTON OF FORT MILL IN YORK COUNTY, AND TO CONVEY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Colonel Logan E. Weston of Fort Mill in York County, on May 5, 2003, at the age of eighty-nine; and

Whereas, Colonel Weston was the son of the late Ernest and Agnes Weston. He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of three wars. He took part in World War II campaigns in Guadalcanal and New Georgia Islands and volunteered for Merrill's Marauders in China, Burma, and India; and

Whereas, Colonel Weston was assigned to the Wolfhound Regiment during the Korean War, was a Green Beret during the Vietnam War, and also served at the Pentagon. He was given the nickname "The Fightin Preacher" because he always led his troops in prayer before leading them into battle; and

Whereas, his daughter, Sheryl Cowling, wrote a biography about Colonel Weston entitled "The Fightin Preacher" and was awarded the George Washington Medal of Excellence; and

Whereas, for his service in the military, Colonel Weston was recognized as one of the United States military's most highly decorated soldiers and he received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Legion of Merit Award, more than one Purple Heart, the Silver Star, the Bronze star, and was nominated for the Medal of Honor; and

Whereas, in 1996, Colonel Weston returned to Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, after his military service, Colonel Weston was the coordinator of religious life and secretary of the YMCA at Texas A & M University in College Station, Texas. The family moved to Fort Mill in 1986, and he was a prayer line volunteer at Heritage USA; and

Whereas, Colonel Weston was active in his community and organizations, as a member of the Merrill's Marauder Association board of directors, American Legion Post 43, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Retired Officers Association, Tega Cay Baptist Church, VFW Post of Fort Mill, and Vineyard International Christian Camp for Children; and

Whereas, Colonel Logan Weston is survived by his wife, Mary Weston; his children, Logan and Karen Weston, Lt. Col. R. Carey and Chris Weston, Susie Weston and John Passanisi, and Sheryl and Marty Cowling; two sisters, Alma Doyle and Rosemary Revis; eleven grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the House of Representatives to pause in their deliberations to note the passing of a distinguished South Carolinian and a gallant soldier. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Colonel Logan E. Weston, of Fort Mill in York County, and convey deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Logan E. Weston of Fort Mill.
