VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO CONGRATULATE THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE LIBRARY AND THE STATE'S PUBLIC LIBRARIES FOR SPONSORING A STATEWIDE READING PROGRAM IN 2003 WITH THE THEME "BOOKS AHOY" THAT IS DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE CHILDREN TO USE THEIR SUMMER VACATION TIME TO ENHANCE THEIR READING SKILLS AND TO EXPAND THEIR PERSONAL READING INTERESTS.
Whereas, summer months are usually a time for rest and relaxation for school children with family vacations and playing with friends; and
Whereas, summer months are also a time of great activity in public libraries with summer reading programs. Summer reading programs held in all public libraries had 81,797 participants in 2002; and
Whereas, reading throughout the summer provides hours of enjoyment for our children as they discover new places and go on new adventures as they read each new book; and
Whereas, this reading contributes to children maintaining their reading skills while away from school; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to recognize the "Books Ahoy" summer reading program for the invaluable service it will provide to school children across the State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate the South Carolina State Library and the state's public libraries for sponsoring a statewide reading program in 2003 with the theme "Books Ahoy" that is designed to encourage children to use their summer vacation time to enhance their reading skills and to expand their personal reading interests.
