A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR RUTH WILLIAMS ASHE FOR HER EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE AND LIFETIME COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY SERVICE AND TO EXTEND TO HER BEST WISHES IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the House of Representatives recognizes those individuals who have used their talents to benefit the citizens of the Palmetto State and have dedicated their time and energy to teaching others; and

Whereas, a retired educator with thirty-seven years in the Aiken County Public School System, Ruth Williams Ashe was a pioneer in special education for the county, specializing in teaching and working with hearing and visually impaired students; and

Whereas, Ms. Ashe received her Bachelor of Science and Masters degrees from South Carolina State University, where she was a member of the Tau Gamma Delta sorority, and she received her ED.S. from the University of Virginia; and

Whereas, as a charter member of the Board of Directors of Mattie C. Hall Nursing Home, Ms. Ashe served as the Chairman of the Board for eight years and was also a charter member and lifetime member of the Croft House; and

Whereas, as the director of summer sessions for special education students and senior citizens at Camp Hope for thirteen years, Ms. Ashe was recognized by the South Carolina Jaycees for her outstanding support and commitment to the camp and during her involvement with the camp, enrollment numbers were at their peak; and

Whereas, Ms. Ashe also served as Chairman of the Lower Savannah Council of Senior Citizens and was the recipient of their Service Award. She was trained at Vanderbilt University in diseases of the ears and eyes, and she served as a research teacher and reporter on diseases of the ears and eyes for the University of Virginia for fifteen years; and

Whereas, among her various awards and honors, Ms. Ashe has been recognized by the City of Aiken Transit Commission, the Boys and Girls of Saint Joseph Indian School in Missouri, the Senior Citizens and Special Education students in Aiken County and the National Federation for the Blind; and

Whereas, Ms. Ashe is a dedicated, faithful member of Cumberland A.M.E. Church, where she has served and continues to serve in several positions, including Stewardess, Trustee, and Building Fund Treasurer; and

Whereas, Ms. Ashe has also been a longtime friend and supporter of Wesley United Methodist Church, where she has donated both her time and energy to making Aiken County a better place to live for those with special needs. Her commitment to educating both senior citizens and children with disabilities has made South Carolina proud to have her as one of its own. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Ruth Williams Ashe for her extraordinary service and lifetime commitment to education and community service and extend to her best wishes in all of her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Ms. Ruth Williams Ashe.
