A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE DR. RANDOLPH P. KOWALSKI, SENIOR MINISTER OF GREENVILLE'S FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, UPON HIS RETIREMENT AFTER FORTY-FOUR YEARS OF SERVICE IN THE MINISTRY, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that we recognize South Carolinians who selflessly work towards making their community, as well as their State, a better place and to commend those individuals who continuously strive to build a sense of togetherness and faith among the people of their community; and

Whereas, Dr. Randolph P. Kowalski, senior minister of First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, has been inspiring the congregation of his church for thirty years, and his respect and devotion to the church and the ministry have been unparalleled; and

Whereas, a native of Anderson, Dr. Kowalski received his Bachelor's degree from Clemson University, his Master of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary, and his Doctor of Divinity degree from Presbyterian College; and

Whereas, before being called to First Presbyterian Church, Dr. Kowalski served two years at the Pendleton Presbyterian Church, five years at the Abbeville Presbyterian Church, and seven years at the Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church in Augusta, Georgia; and

Whereas, after taking over as senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, Dr. Kowalski provided strong leadership that has enabled the congregation to grow from six hundred in 1974, to over four thousand today, making it the largest PCUSA Presbyterian Church in South Carolina and the eighth largest in the nation; and

Whereas, in addition to enlarging the church, Dr. Kowalski has encouraged the membership to be involved in the community, with the church budgeting over $850,000 in local, national, and international services for 2004, to aid ministries which feed the hungry, house the homeless, rehabilitate those with alcohol and drug problems, educate and care for children, and counsel women with problem pregnancies; and

Whereas, Dr. Kowalski also encourages the congregation to participate in community activities and leads by example as a member of numerous civic, educational, and religious boards, including the General Assembly's Committee on Theological Education, the Metropolitan YMCA, and the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts, Cancer Society, Red Cross, and Salvation Army; and

Whereas, Dr. Kowalski was invited to participate in the "Amsterdam 2000", the Billy Graham Worldwide Evangelism Meeting, and in 2003, was invited to participate in the prayer service for the inauguration of Governor Mark Sanford; and

Whereas, Dr. Kowalski has been a weekly columnist in the Greenville News-Piedmont and currently hosts "Perceptions", a daily radio broadcast. His commitment to serving the community will continue long after he retires; and

Whereas, in a day when our society is confronted with many challenges, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to recognize a man like Dr. Randolph P. Kowalski, who has dedicated his life to the fostering of religion and morality, not only in the congregations which he has served, but also in the communities in which he has lived. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize Dr. Randolph P. Kowalski, Senior Minister of Greenville's First Presbyterian Church, upon his retirement after forty-four years of service in the ministry and extend best wishes to him in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Randolph P. Kowalski.
