A HOUSE RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO AIKEN RESIDENTS ANNE CAMPBELL AND BILL REYNOLDS AND TO THE UNITED WAY OF AIKEN COUNTY AND AIKEN CENTER FOR THE ARTS FOR THEIR ROLES IN PRODUCING "HORSEPLAY", A PUBLIC ARTS FUNDRAISER, AND CONGRATULATING THEM ON THE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND SMILES THE PROJECT ENGENDERED.

Whereas, the Aiken community has proud traditions of supporting the arts and of appreciating good horseflesh; and

Whereas, that dual community spirit developed into a hugely successful fundraiser, raising more than a quarter of a million dollars for the arts and producing thousands of smiles from both townspeople and tourists; and

Whereas, the brainchild of Anne Campbell, the project HORSEPLAY was pulled together by Bill Reynolds with the support of the United Way of Aiken County and the Aiken Center for the Arts; and

Whereas, as a result, thirty-one life-size fiberglass horses, decorated by professional artists from the Carolinas and Georgia, dotted the Aiken landscape for five months, attracting thousands of tourists and thousands of dollars in sponsorship fees; and

Whereas, the horses were auctioned at a gala gathering during Steeplechase weekend, and the more than two hundred fifty thousand dollars finally realized has been earmarked for a decade of innovative art programs and scholarships for Aiken's children and seniors through the Center for the Arts; and

Whereas, this unique collaboration is a fine example of the ingenuity, creativity, and diligence of the residents of this State when they undertake to better the lives of their fellow citizens. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their appreciation to Aiken County residents Anne Campbell and Bill Reynolds and to the United Way of Aiken County and Aiken County Center for the Arts for their roles in producing HORSEPLAY, a public arts fundraiser, and congratulate them on the thousands of dollars and smiles the project engendered.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be presented to Anne Campbell and Bill Reynolds.
