TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE DR. SIDNEY GRIFFIN OF LAMAR FOR HIS DEDICATION TO THE FIELD OF MEDICINE AND HIS COMMITMENT TO EDUCATING SOUTH CAROLINIANS ABOUT ORGAN DONATION.

Whereas, South Carolina is third in the nation for chronic kidney disease, and there are approximately six hundred fifty people in the State waiting to have kidney transplants, which can take up to two years; and

Whereas, Dr. Sidney Griffin, a general practitioner from Lamar received a kidney transplant in 2003, from his daughter Sarah, who has a doctorate in public health and is a member of the research faculty at the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, after Sarah qualified as a perfect match, they underwent the kidney transplant at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston; and

Whereas, after the transplant, Dr. Griffin was in the hospital for five days and stayed in Charleston for three weeks for blood tests, and Sarah was back at work within six weeks; and

Whereas, in order to raise awareness of organ donation, Dr. Griffin joined Team MUSC, whose members have received organ transplants at the medical university, and participated in the 27th Annual Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, walking with other members of Team MUSC; and

Whereas, one of the ways MUSC promotes the awareness of living donors is through Team MUSC, whose motto is "Share your life, share your decisions", and their participation in the Cooper River Bridge Run was aimed at increasing awareness of organ transplants and the number of living donors; and

Whereas, Dr. Griffin's daughter, Lucia, who works at MUSC in Charleston, is the one who encouraged her father and former governor, David Beasley, to walk in the Cooper River Bridge Run; and

Whereas, Dr. Griffin is an inspiration and true leader in the campaign for organ donation and his success and dedication have been a prime example of giving and caring in South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize Dr. Sidney Griffin of Lamar for his dedication to the field of medicine and his commitment to educating South Carolinians about organ donation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Sidney Griffin of Lamar.
