VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE THE MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH BISHOP VERNON RANDOLPH BYRD UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, AND WISHING HIM GOOD HEALTH AND MUCH HAPPINESS IN THE YEARS TO COME.
Whereas, when a man of God retires from the office of Bishop it is a joyous occasion to be shared by his family and friends, and the members of the General Assembly are honored to recognize this special day as Bishop Vernon Randolph Byrd retires from this position with the African Methodist Episcopal Church; and
Whereas, Bishop Byrd was born in Enoree, South Carolina where he received his public school education; and
Whereas, after graduating from Bell Street High School, he enrolled in Allen University where he received the Bachelor of Arts degree, and later received the Master of Sacred Theology degree from Boston University; and
Whereas, called to preach the word of God at the age of twelve, Bishop Byrd was licensed to preach at the age of seventeen; and
Whereas, his ministry included pastorates at Macedonia African Methodist Episcopal Church in Seaford, Delaware, St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Hamilton, Bermuda, and Macedonia African American Episcopal Church in Camden, New Jersey, and also served as Presiding Elder of the Newark District from 1966 to 1967; and
Whereas, Bishop Byrd was elected to 105th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church during the 1984 General Conference and assigned to the 14th Episcopal District. During his administration, Bishop Byrd initiated numerous projects including the Frank Curtis Cummings Health Clinic built in Monrovia, Liberia; and
Whereas, he has also served in the 16th, 13th, and 5th Episcopal Districts where he continued in his quest to save souls for God's Kingdom; and
Whereas, he is member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and the Royal Lodge of Scotland; and
Whereas, Bishop Byrd is married to Theora Lindsey Byrd, and together they are the proud parents of four children and have two grandchildren; and
Whereas, is fitting and appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to recognize one of the outstanding spiritual leaders of the Palmetto State on the occasion of his retirement. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize the many accomplishments of African Methodist Episcopal Church Bishop Vernon Randolph Byrd upon the occasion of his retirement, and wish him good health and much happiness in the years to come.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Bishop Vernon Randolph Byrd.
