TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-19-92 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT A LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT MAY VARY THE STATEWIDE UNIFORM SCHOOL START DATE AND ALLOW THIS VARIANCE PURSUANT TO A REFERENDUM HELD IN THE DISTRICT AS PRESCRIBED.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Article 1, Chapter 19, Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 59-19-92. A local school district board may vary the statewide uniform school start date upon the approval of a majority of the qualified voters of the district by referendum scheduled at the time of the next general election. The election commission of the county in which the school district is located shall conduct the referendum pursuant to the election laws of the State, mutatis mutandis."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
