A SENATE RESOLUTION

JOINING IN THE MANY TRIBUTES TO THE HONORABLE JASPER M. CURETON AS HE RETIRES FROM HIS SEAT ON THE SOUTH CAROLINA COURT OF APPEALS AND HONORING HIS COUNTLESS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CAUSE OF JUSTICE IN BOTH THE LEGAL SYSTEM AND IN SOCIETY.

Whereas, the Honorable Jasper M. Cureton has served the South Carolina Court of Appeals since his appointment in 1983 to the newly formed appellate court; and

Whereas, that appointment, making him the first African-American appellate judge in this State since Reconstruction, was only one in a number of "firsts" Judge Cureton accomplished in his illustrious legal career: Valedictorian of his Oconee County high school graduating class, the first African-American graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, and the first African-American Master-in-Equity in South Carolina since Reconstruction; and

Whereas, his legal wisdom and his personal experiences awakened his need to effectively support community efforts to provide access to justice in the courts and in the community; and

Whereas, as a volunteer, he campaigned for the United Way, Big Brothers, Boy Scouts, March of Dimes, Legal Services, Mental Health, and Community Relations Council, among others; and

Whereas, even now he serves as chairman of the Trustee Board of Zion Baptist Church and as a board member of the Family Service Center and Glenforest School; and

Whereas, his professional and personal activities testify to the achievement of his life's goals: leaving a legacy of competence, diligence, and fairness in the dispensation of justice and lifting the burden of others in the community less fortunate than himself. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, join in the many tributes to the Honorable Jasper M. Cureton as he retires from his seat on the South Carolina Court of Appeals and honor his countless contributions to the cause of justice in both the legal system and in society.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable Jasper M. Cureton.
