A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEMORATE THE ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MILBANK MEMORIAL FUND, TO HONOR THOSE ASSOCIATED WITH THE FOUNDATION FOR THEIR EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WELL-BEING OF AMERICA'S ILL, AND TO WISH THE FOUNDATION CONTINUED SUCCESS IN ITS NEXT ONE HUNDRED YEARS.

Whereas, the Milbank Memorial Fund celebrated its one hundredth anniversary in New York City on December 8, 2005, marking a century of continued commitment to communicating the needs of those at greatest risk of death or disease to decision makers charged with making effective health care policy; and

Whereas, accurately described as a "small foundation with a big footprint," the Milbank Memorial Fund has spent 465 million dollars for charitable purposes since its inception and has been active both in the United States and abroad; and

Whereas, each decade of the foundation's existence has brought continued growth and success. In the 1920's, it concentrated its efforts on the poor in New York City and created models for neighborhood health care centers in urban and rural New York State; and

Whereas, in the 1930's, Milbank Memorial Fund became a national foundation, and continued to sponsor research in demography and create new models for community-based services in mental health into the 1950's; and

Whereas, young professionals in the field of community medicine were greatly aided by the Milbank Scholars Program in the 1960's. During the 1970's the foundation established a commission to assess the work of schools of public health and supported research in epidemiology that continued throughout the 1980's; and

Whereas, since 1990 the foundation has centered its efforts in advancing health care concerns and in helping policymakers make informed decisions with the most current data available; and

Whereas, South Carolina as a whole has benefited from the work of the Milbank Memorial Fund, and the Senate takes pride in recognizing those associated with the foundation for their extraordinary efforts. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the establishment of the Milbank Memorial Fund, honor those associated with the foundation for their exceptional contributions to the well-being of America's ill, and wish the foundation continued success in its next one hundred years.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Chief Executive Officer of the Milbank Memorial Fund.
