A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING DR. RONALD K. COWDEN ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, HONORING HIS MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND YEARS OF EXEMPLARY LEADERSHIP, AND WISHING HIM MUCH SUCCESS IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Dr. Ronald Cowden earned his Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Western Michigan University, his Master's Degree in Educational Administration from Eastern Michigan University, and his Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Michigan; and

Whereas, in Michigan he served as an elementary Principal, a junior high Principal, a senior high Assistant Principal, Student Activities Director, Principal at Manistee High School and Traverse City High School, as well as Administrative Assistant to Superintendent of Livonis Public Schools; and

Whereas, Dr. Cowden has served the students of South Carolina as Principal of Spring Valley High School, and is currently Principal of Dutch Fork High School; and

Whereas, under his direction, Spring Valley was twice recognized as a national Blue Ribbon School, was named Redbook magazine's "Best High School in South Carolina," and was named one of the nation's nine safest high schools by the U.S. Department of Education; and

Whereas, Dr. Cowden's work at Dutch Fork has been equally successful. The national Blue Ribbon school, highly acclaimed for academic achievement, innovation, and leadership expertise, was recognized in 1999 as having achieved South Carolina's top SAT and Advanced Placement scores; and

Whereas, Dr. Cowden has chaired numerous secondary school principal panels and boards, served as guest lecturer at the college and university levels, spearheaded the successful block scheduling model at Spring Valley, instituted School Improvement Teams to provide excellence in the learning environment, and was appointed by the South Carolina Department of Education as a consultant to school districts in need of operational and achievement improvement; and

Whereas, he was selected as "Outstanding Educator" by the Livonia Jaycees and as Livonia's "Outstanding Citizen" for his community and civic involvement, and in 1998, he was selected as South Carolina's Principal of the Year; and

Whereas, his dedication is not limited to the classroom. Dr. Cowden is a Rotarian, Education Chairperson for the American Cancer Society, and is a member of Spring Valley Presbyterian Church; and

Whereas, Dr. Cowden is a role model for the entire community of Northeast Columbia and it is with great admiration that the members of the Senate honor him for touching and bettering the lives of so many young people in Richland and Lexington Counties and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this Resolution, congratulate Dr. Ronald Cowden on the occasion of his retirement, honor his exemplary leadership and dedication, and wish him much success in all of his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Ronald K. Cowden.
