A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE FRANCIS HUGH WARDLAW ACADEMY LADY PATRIOTS BASKETBALL TEAM OF EDGEFIELD COUNTY ON ITS MOST IMPRESSIVE SCISA CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AND TO HONOR ITS PLAYERS AND THEIR COACH, DENNIS GIBSON, ON ANOTHER EXTRAORDINARY SEASON.

Whereas, the Wardlaw Academy Lady Patriots capped off a sensational season with a 30-2 record and the SCISA Class A State Championship; and

Whereas, the discipline, determination, and rigorous work ethic instilled into each player by Coach Dennis Gibson and his staff in addition to the natural talent and skills of the Lady Patriots created the perfect chemistry needed to dominate the regular season and win the state championship; and

Whereas, Wardlaw began its perfect run through the playoffs by defeating Charleston Collegiate in the quarterfinals with a score of 49-28 before advancing to the semifinal game. The Lady Patriots were lead by Kaylee Beck, who scored fifteen points, Elizabeth Stone, who added fourteen points, and Courtney Asbill, who finished with eleven points; and

Whereas, in the semifinal game, the Lady Patriots faced Cathedral Academy and outscored them 45-20 behind team leader Elizabeth Stone's twenty-two points followed by six point performances by Anna Yarborough and Rebecca Balentine, respectively; and

Whereas, Wardlaw had to play Newberry Academy, for the fifth time of the year, in the state title game after having defeated Newberry in the last three consecutive meetings between the two teams; and

Whereas, the Lady Patriots started strong against Newberry going up 8-1 in the opening minutes before allowing Newberry to come back and finish the first half with the score of 19-14. Newberry eventually tied the game at 38-38 in the fourth quarter, but they could not overcome Wardlaw's exceptional free throw shooting and ended up losing the championship to the Lady Patriots 42-40; and

Whereas, Wardlaw's Elizabeth Stone, Kaylee Beck, and Rebecca Balentine each made the all tournament team; and

Whereas, the Senate takes great pride in recognizing the Wardlaw Academy Lady Patriots Basketball Team on an outstanding achievement and in honoring them for their hard work and dedication on the court as well as in the classroom. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the Francis Hugh Wardlaw Academy Lady Patriots Basketball Team of Edgefield County on its most impressive SCISA Class A State Championship Title and honor its players and their coach, Dennis Gibson, on another extraordinary season.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the players, coaches, and school officials of the Wardlaw Academy Lady Partiots Basketball Team.
