A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE MR. JERRY GUO OF GREER ON BEING NAMED ONE OF THE TOP TWO VOLUNTEERS OF SOUTH CAROLINA FOR 2005 IN THE TENTH ANNUAL PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS PROGRAM.

Whereas, Mr. Jerry Guo, seventeen, of Greer was named one of South Carolina's top two youth volunteers for 2005 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism; and

Whereas, the awards program, now in its tenth year, received more than 20,000 high school and middle-level student applications this year; and

Whereas, we are extremely proud of all citizens of this State who are dedicated to addressing the needs of others in the area, especially our young adults; and

Whereas, Mr. Guo, a senior at Riverside High School, founded and now leads "Science Help," a nonprofit organization that assists disadvantaged youth across the country with science homework and projects, and encourages them to pursue scientific careers; and

Whereas, he started small by asking a few friends to help him mentor a small number of struggling students. However, he soon secured corporate grants totaling more than $30,000, significantly expanded his mentor "staff", and created a website that enabled the mentors to connect with students all over the country; and

Whereas, Mr. Guo and his fellow volunteers not only help students with science homework, but provide support for science fair projects, put students in touch with professors at research institutions, and assist with independent research efforts; and

Whereas, Mr. Guo is dedicated to helping kids experience the joys of hands-on research which hopefully will set them on a lifelong path of discovery; and

Whereas, as a state honoree, Mr. Guo will travel to Washington, D.C., for a chance at receiving the prestigious award of National Honoree, one of the nation's top ten youth volunteers of 2005; and

Whereas, the people of Greer and of the State of South Carolina are extremely fortunate to have among them such a caring and dedicated young person who is willing to donate his time and energy to helping others. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives recognize and congratulate Mr. Jerry Guo of Greer on being named one of the top two volunteers of South Carolina in the tenth annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Jerry Guo of Greer.
