A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO OFFER THE WARMEST CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BETH ISRAEL CONGREGATION OF BEAUFORT ON THE HISTORIC OCCASION OF ITS ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND THIS WONDERFUL PLACE OF WORSHIP FOR ITS SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF ITS CONGREGANTS AND ON ITS COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the presence of Jewish families in Beaufort, South Carolina, is documented as early as the 1760s; and

Whereas, South Carolina and Beaufort County have been a stage upon which important and meaningful American Jewish history has been played for several centuries; and

Whereas, a sufficient number of Jewish families lived in Beaufort by the early twentieth century and these families sought regular religious services and training of their children; and

Whereas, these Jewish families obtained a charter for the Congregation Beth Israel from the State of South Carolina in 1905 and shortly thereafter constructed their synagogue on Scott Street; and

Whereas, Congregation Beth Israel has continuously operated at its Scott Street address in its original building from 1905 until the present providing religious support for the Jewish community of Beaufort; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to recognize the contributions and impact of the Beth Israel Congregation as it commemorates one hundred years of spiritual worship, education, fellowship, and faith in 2005. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives offer the warmest congratulations to the Beth Israel Congregation of Beaufort on the historic occasion of its one hundredth anniversary and commend this wonderful place of worship for its significant impact on the lives of its congregants and on its community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Beth Israel Congregation of Beaufort.
