A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. MARY B. SMITH OF RICHLAND COUNTY FOR HER THIRTY YEARS OF DEVOTED TEACHING, ALL OF WHICH WAS SPENT AT GADSDEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND EXTEND BEST WISHES ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT.

Whereas, it has come to the attention of the members of the House of Representatives that Mrs. Mary B. Smith of Richland County is retiring after thirty years of dedicated service to the public education system; and

Whereas, Mrs. Smith is married to Moses Smith of Hopkins and she is the proud mother of eight children and fourteen grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mary Smith received her Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Carolina and a Masters Degree in Education from Cambridge College in Boston, Massachusetts; and

Whereas, she is a member of the Richland County Education Association, the South Carolina Education Association, and school representative for the Richland County Education Association; and

Whereas, her professional development has demonstrated a broad and thorough grasp of the education process; and

Whereas, she is listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 2000 and 2002 and selected as Teacher of the Year at Gadsden Elementary School in 2004-2005; and

Whereas, her involvement underscores her commitment and unselfish efforts to improve the quality of life in her community which include being a mentor for students at Gadsden Elementary School, coordinating Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for senior citizens, hosts Senior Citizens Day at the school where she has taught for thirty years, and is an active member of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Hopkins; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the House to pause in their deliberations to recognize this outstanding teacher who has given unselfishly of her time and effort touching the many lives of students with whom she has come in contact during her illustrious career. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives congratulate Mrs. Mary B. Smith of Richland County for her thirty years of devoted teaching, all which was spent at Gadsden Elementary School, and extend best wishes on the occasion of her retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Mary B. Smith and Dr. Charles A. DeLaughter, Principal, Gadsden Elementary School.
