A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE LANCE CORPORAL SHAYWARD S. MCKENZIE OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY PATROL ON BEING NAMED THE 2004 SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY PATROL TROOPER OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, Lance Corporal Shayward McKenzie began his law enforcement career in Florence as a telecommunications operator for the Highway Patrol and became a Trooper in 1997 when he was assigned to Marlboro County; and

Whereas, he was promoted to Trooper First Class in 1999 and transferred to Clarendon County, promoted to Senior Trooper in 2001, and Lance Corporal in 2003; and

Whereas, on November 4, 2004, while patrolling in Sumter County, Lance Corporal McKenzie heard a radio broadcast requesting officers be on the lookout for a vehicle occupied by three males who had just committed an armed robbery; and

Whereas, Corporal McKenzie observed the vehicle described by the report and initiated a felony traffic stop, which produced the evidence of the bank robbery in Sumter, and the arrest of all three suspects; and

Whereas, Lance Corporal McKenzie is a native of Scranton, S.C., and he and his wife, Jennifer, currently reside in Olanta where they are active in the community and attend Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church in Lake City; and

Whereas, Lance Corporal Shayward S. McKenzie, not just through the heroics detailed in this resolution, but equally as important, through his professionalism and dedication every day as a Trooper of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, brings great credit upon the South Carolina Highway Patrol, this State, his family, and himself. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Lance Corporal Shayward S. McKenzie of the South Carolina Highway Patrol on being named the 2004 South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper of the Year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Lance Corporal McKenzie.
