A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MS. JEAN BRIDGES OF LEXINGTON COUNTY ON WINNING THE JANE KENNEDY EXCELLENCE IN AGING AWARD, AND TO HONOR HER FOR THE POSITIVE IMPACT SHE HAS MADE ON THE SENIOR COMMUNITY OF WEST COLUMBIA AND SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the Jane Kennedy Excellence in Aging Award has been presented annually since 1977 by the Southeastern Association of Area Agencies on Aging to an individual who has made a positive impact on the quality of life of older adults; and

Whereas, the award, named for a former area agency on aging director who was the godmother of Jimmy Buffet, was presented to Ms. Bridges of West Columbia, on November 14, 2005 at the annual training conference of the organization held in Orange Beach, Alabama; and

Whereas, Ms. Bridges is a legislative volunteer for the State AARP organization, taking time to speak to senior groups about the prescription drug card, and plans programs and arranges speakers for the local chapter of AARP; and

Whereas, as a member of the Advisory Board of Central Midlands Regional Aging Advisory Committee, she makes a special effort to learn everything possible about services available to seniors in order to share with them this information, and was also appointed by Governor Mark Sanford to the Lieutenant Governor's Advisory Council on Aging; and

Whereas, since 2002, Ms. Bridges has been a member of the Silver Haired Legislature and is presently a representative from Lexington County in that group, frequently attending hearings on bills that affect seniors; and

Whereas, she is a board member at the Shepherd's Center of Columbia, a branch of the national educational organization Shepherds' Centers of America that entertains church groups, assisted living homes, and retirement communities and in so doing plans luncheon programs and invites speakers to inform the seniors on subjects concerning them in many areas; and

Whereas, she is very active in her church, First Baptist of Columbia, where she is president of OASIS, the senior organization, and also serves as a greeter and a member of the Senior Adult Council; and

Whereas, Ms. Bridges was a recent delegate to the state White House Conferences on Aging in April, 2005; and

Whereas, she is a member of the Senior Alliance, a networking group of providers for senior needs and has taken a training course on care giving for Alzheimer's patients; and

Whereas, Ms. Bridges was a caregiver for both her husband and her mother which has allowed her to know first hand some of the difficulties seniors and caregivers face in their daily lives; and

Whereas, by learning as much as she can about aging, illnesses that affect seniors, and services that are available to them and by being an advocate for the senior population, she has been a blessing to the senior community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Ms. Jean Bridges of Lexington County on winning the Jane Kennedy Excellence in Aging Award, and honor her for the positive impact she has made on the senior community of West Columbia and throughout South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Jean Bridges.
