A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR WILLIAM "BILL" SAUNDERS FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO WISH HIM THE BEST IN ALL FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the House of Representatives recognizes those individuals whose life work directly benefits our beloved State, making South Carolina a better place to work and live; and

Whereas, a graduate of Laing High School, Mr. William "Bill" Saunders went on to study at Southern Business College and Southern Illinois University; and

Whereas, bravely serving his country in the United States Army, Mr. Saunders was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1954 and was awarded the prestigious Purple Heart in 2002; and

Whereas, a devoted husband and family man, Mr. Saunders shares a loving marriage with his wife, Henrietta J. Saunders, and adores his children, William, Sharon, Loretta, Kathleen, Byron, Gary, Alphea, Myra, Clinton, and Tamara; and

Whereas, Mr. Saunders is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Committee on Better Racial Assurance (COBRA) Human Services Agency in Charleston, South Carolina. He is also the former owner and president of several area radio stations, including WPAL, WWWZ, and WDPN; and

Whereas, extraordinarily civic-minded, Mr. Saunders served as a member of the Public Service Commission of South Carolina, representing the First Congressional District from 1994-2004 and also served as the Chairman of the Public Service Commission in 2002; and

Whereas, Mr. Saunders' community involvements are numerous and extensive and include membership in the National Association of Broadcasters, National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, National Water Commission, Trident Technical College Foundation, and the Medical University of South Carolina President's Advisory Council, among many others; and

Whereas, politically, Mr. Saunders has given many years to the Charleston County Democratic Party and was elected to the Charleston County O.E.O. Commission in 1967; and

Whereas, Mr. Saunders has earned both local and national praise for his impressive work. He is a past recipient of the NAACP Outstanding Service Award and the American Federation Silver Medal ADDY Award. He also was inducted into the University of South Carolina College of Journalism and Mass Communication Diamond Circle, among other notable achievements; and

Whereas, Mr. Bill Saunders deserves recognition for all he has done in furtherance of South Carolina, and the House of Representatives is certain that he will only continue to better the lives of those around him in the years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mr. William "Bill" Saunders for his outstanding service to the State of South Carolina, and wish him the best in all future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. William "Bill" Saunders.
