A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR JUANITA MIDDLETON OF CHARLESTON COUNTY FOR HER OUTSTANDING COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION TO THE EDUCATION OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S YOUTH AND TO WISH HER ALL THE BEST UPON HER RETIREMENT.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the House of Representatives recognizes South Carolinians who selflessly give their time and energy in developing young minds; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the great achievements of those who teach and to honor these individuals who have continued to inspire children year after year; and

Whereas, Juanita Middleton, principal leader of Lincoln High School, truly deserves such distinction, as she has helped to shape countless lives in her remarkable forty-year career in education; and

Whereas, a 1963 graduate of Benedict College, Mrs. Middleton earned a Master of Science degree in reading and elementary education at the City College of New York in 1972 and has continued to further her knowledge and skills by taking graduate level courses at the Citadel, College of Charleston, and Clemson University; and

Whereas, Mrs. Middleton is certified by the State Department of Education as an elementary teacher, reading coordinator-director, elementary and high school supervisor, and elementary and high school principal; and

Whereas, a devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Middleton shares a loving marriage with her high school sweetheart, James Middleton, and is the beloved mother of James II and Vanessa and the doting grandmother of two precious grandchildren; and

Whereas, after teaching in the New York City school system for thirteen years, she returned home to McClellanville and taught at Jennie Moore and James B. Edwards Elementary Schools; and

Whereas, her contributions and leadership throughout her twenty-seven year tenure as principal in Charleston County Constituent School District I, where she has served as principal of each school in the district, has made a tremendous impact on education; and

Whereas, Mrs. Middleton's innovative skill and enterprising methods have especially served Lincoln High School well. As principal specialist at Lincoln High School from 2003 through 2005 and as principal leader this past school year, Mrs. Middleton led the faculty, staff, and students to a Palmetto Gold Award for achievement on test scores, resulting in Lincoln High School moving from an absolute score of "unsatisfactory" to "good" and from an improvement score of "below average" to "excellent"; and

Whereas, recognized for her devotion to public education, among Mrs. Middleton's numerous honors and awards are the 1998 Reader's Digest American Hero in Education Award, the Tri-county Association for Counseling and Development Outstanding Administrator of the Year Award, and the Septima Poinsetta Clark Award for Excellence in Education, for which she was the first recipient. She also is a founding member of the South Carolina First Steps to Readiness Program and Chairman of the Sewee to Santee Community Development Corporation; and

Whereas, on Saturday, May 20, 2006, Mrs. Middleton was honored by the Charleston County School Board upon the dedication of the Juanita Middleton Rising Star Childcare Center and by the Charleston County Constituent School Board Number One, which held a retirement celebration in her honor at St. James-Santee Elementary School; and

Whereas, Mrs. Middleton remains as dedicated to her students and to the furtherance of public education as she was when she began her career as an educator forty years ago, and the students of Charleston County Constituent School District I and the surrounding communities are fortunate to have her in their lives. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Juanita Middleton of Charleston County for her outstanding commitment and dedication to the education of South Carolina's youth and wish her all the best upon her retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Mrs. Juanita Middleton.
