A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND ROCHE FOR ITS MANY CONTRIBUTIONS IN IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR PEOPLE IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE COMPANY ON ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF OPERATING IN THE UNITED STATES.

Whereas, Roche is a leading international healthcare innovator with one of the world's most modern pharmaceutical research and process development facilities in Florence, South Carolina, producing important active ingredients for life-saving medicines; and

Whereas Roche has reached the milestone of one hundred years of operating in the United States; and

Whereas, in marking this milestone, the company and its approximately 300 employees in South Carolina, commemorate and renew their century-long commitment to enhancing the health, well-being and quality of life of people throughout America and around the world; and

Whereas, Roche, in its one hundred year history in America has ushered in such medical, social and environmental innovations as novel diagnostics that benefit people with diabetes, heart disease and cancer; groundbreaking social innovations, such as the first corporate-sponsored child care center in America, and one the U.S. pharmaceutical industry's first formal indigent patient program; important medicines for diseases including cancer, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis, developed critical pharmaceuticals to safeguard the American people in the event of a flu pandemic; and taken noteworthy steps in environmental sustainability, such as the early installation of cogeneration technology to reduce energy consumption, and the recent introduction of hybrid cars for its pharmaceutical sales fleet to reduce reliance on oil as well as cut down on air emissions; and

Whereas, today Roche contributes to South Carolina's economy, tax base, employment rate, public education system, especially in the fields of math and science, and further contributes to the health of the nation's communities through employing approximately 300 workers in Florence, South Carolina, having an economic impact in South Carolina of seventy-five million dollars annually, and contributing to noteworthy community service efforts. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commend Roche for its many contributions in improving the quality of life for people in South Carolina and throughout the world, and to congratulate the company on its 100th anniversary of operating in the United States.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Roche in Florence, South Carolina.
