A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE USS GEORGE BANCROFT, A UNITED STATES NAVAL SUBMARINE HOME PORTED AT THE CHARLESTON NAVAL BASE, AND ITS CREWS FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY WHILE THE SUBMARINE WAS IN ACTIVE COMMISSIONED SERVICE, AND TO WELCOME FORMER CREW MEMBERS TO CHARLESTON AND SOUTH CAROLINA ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR REUNION.

Whereas, the USS George Bancroft (SSBN 643) was a United States Naval submarine with a proud history which had her home port at the Charleston Naval Base during the 1960's, 1970's, and 1980's; and

Whereas, this honored submarine and its crews served the United States of America with great bravery and distinction; and

Whereas, the Bancroft was commissioned on January 22, 1966, and decommissioned on September 21, 1993. She conducted seventy-two fleet ballistic missile deterrent patrols carrying Polaris, Poseidon, and later Trident missiles and performed twenty operational missile launches between April 1966 and February 1989; and

Whereas, the Bancroft received two Meritorious Unit Commendations, was named Fleet Ballistic Submarine of the Year in 1984, and received the Humanitarian Medal for help with the Hurricane Hugo disaster in Charleston in 1989; and

Whereas, the crews which served on the Bancroft were highly professional, dedicated, and well-trained sailors who served with skill and bravery and remained a closely-knit group after they moved on to other assignments; and

Whereas, the Bancroft now has the honor of having her sail become a memorial at the entrance of Kings Bay Submarine Base in Kingsland, Georgia; and

Whereas, in April 2005, the USS George Bancroft Association will hold a reunion in Mount Pleasant and the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to recognize the accomplishments of the USS George Bancroft and the fine crews which served aboard her and also welcome the reunion participants to Charleston on this wonderful occasion. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly commend the USS George Bancroft, a United States Naval submarine home ported at the Charleston Naval Base, and her crews for outstanding service to our country while the submarine was in active commissioned service, and welcome former crew members to Charleston and South Carolina on the occasion of their reunion.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dale A. Presley, Chairman of the USS George Bancroft Association Reunion Committee.
