VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-18-315 SO AS TO PROVIDE CIRCUMSTANCES AND CONDITIONS FOR A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA IN REGARD TO EXIT AND END-OF-COURSE EXAMINATIONS FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE DEPENDENTS OF MILITARY PERSONNEL ON ACTIVE DUTY STATUS TRANSFERRED TO SOUTH CAROLINA, IF THE STUDENT ENROLLS IN A SCHOOL OF THIS STATE AFTER THE REQUIRED SOUTH CAROLINA EXIT OR END-OF-COURSE EXAMINATIONS HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO THE OTHER STUDENTS IN THE SAME CLASS.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Chapter 18, Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 59-18-315. (A) For the purpose of meeting the requirements for high school graduation and a high school diploma in regard to students who are dependents of military personnel on active duty status transferred to South Carolina, if the student enrolls in a school of this State after the required exit or end-of-course examinations have been given to the other students in the same class, exit examinations, end-of-course examinations, national norm-referenced achievement tests, or other alternative types of testing deemed comparable to South Carolina exams by the Department of Education taken in the student's previous state of residence required for graduation and successfully passed must be accepted in lieu of the South Carolina required exit and end-of-course examinations.
(B) If the alternative tests referenced in subsection (A) were not taken or required in the student's previous state of residence, and if such a student transferring to a school of this State is ineligible to receive a South Carolina high school diploma for these reasons, the school district where the student attends school, together with the Department of Education, shall coordinate with the Department of Education in the student's previous state of residence to ensure the student receives a high school diploma from that state if he meets the requirements for graduation in that state after taking into account his academic performance in this State."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
