A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE PEOPLE AND STATE OF ISRAEL ON THE CELEBRATION OF THE SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF ISRAEL'S STATEHOOD AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES AS SOUTH CAROLINA'S MAY 21, 2008, CELEBRATION JOINS IN THE WORLDWIDE RECOGNITION OF THIS MOMENTOUS OCCASION.

Whereas, on November 29, 1947, the United Nations General Assembly voted to partition the British Mandate of Palestine and create a Jewish state; and

Whereas, on May 14, 1948, rising from the horror of the Holocaust and the six million Jewish victims who perished, the people of Israel proclaimed the establishment of the sovereign and independent State of Israel; and

Whereas, this region, long known as the Holy Land, has a very rich and culturally diverse history spanning thousands of years and holds great religious and spiritual significance to people of faith; and

Whereas, on May 21, 2008, the State of South Carolina and members and friends of the worldwide Jewish community will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel; and

Whereas, since the founding of Israel, the United States has had no greater friend and ally in the Middle East, a relationship based upon mutually shared democratic values, common strategic interests, and moral bonds of friendship and mutual respect; and

Whereas, persevering against great odds and tragic human suffering, Israel has built a world-class civilization, a vibrant democracy, a thriving economy, and a culturally and academically rich society, providing a homeland and haven to hundreds of thousands of Jews and their descendants from all over the world; and

Whereas, the people of South Carolina and the people of Israel hold dear the principles of democracy and freedom and have mutually shared in the benefits of a free marketplace; and

Whereas, during the last six years, the State of South Carolina has purchased over thirty million dollars in Israeli government bonds that have been issued to assist with the development and restoration of the infrastructural needs of Israel; and

Whereas, it is proper and fitting for the members of the South Carolina Senate to pause in their deliberations to express their deep admiration and appreciation for the people and State of Israel for all they have endured and accomplished. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor the people and State of Israel on the celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of Israel's statehood and to extend best wishes as South Carolina's May 21, 2008, celebration joins in the worldwide recognition of this momentous occasion.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Joshua Matza, President and Chief Executive Officer of the State of Israel Bonds.
