A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE HONORABLE LEWIS R. VAUGHN, OF GREENVILLE COUNTY, FOR TWENTY YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE, AND TO EXPRESS DEEP APPRECIATION FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR STATE, TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, AND TO HIS CONSTITUENTS.

Whereas, the Honorable Lewis R. Vaughn of Greer has served the citizens of Greenville County in the South Carolina House of Representatives and in the Senate for twenty years with enthusiasm, devotion, and integrity; and

Whereas, born in Greenville, Lewis Vaughn married his beloved wife Lila Mae Waldrop on August 26, 1955, and he and Lila had two wonderful children; and

Whereas, after he served our nation in the United States Armed Forces from 1950 to 1956, he became a successful business and civic leader in Greenville County and the Upstate of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Senator Vaughn began his service in the House of Representatives in 1989 and served there without interruption until his election to the Senate in November 2006 to fill the unexpired term of the late Senator J. Verne Smith, his dear friend and fellow resident of Greer who had resigned from the Senate due to health reasons; and

Whereas, as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee an later as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee among other committee assignments, he worked hard to reduce taxes and limit the role of government, always believing that the citizens of this State and his district were the best arbiters of what was best for them; and

Whereas, he is perhaps best known for his advocacy of school choice and his work to stop "BEST" school financing plans, where on a lease-purchase arrangement school districts could finance school construction without obtaining voter approval in a referendum; and

Whereas, Lewis Vaughn, in his legislative life, is a man with a quiet demeanor and a sharp intellect who always knows where he stands on an issue and what he thinks will solve the problem in the best interests of our state's citizens; and

Whereas, he also has served his community in many other capacities including service as a member of the Greenville/Pickens Transportation Committee since 1994, as chairman of the Blue Ridge Ruritan Club, and as a member of Locust Hill Baptist Church, the Rotary Club, and the Taylor's Masonic Lodge Number 345; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate will greatly miss the wisdom and integrity that Lewis R. Vaughn has brought to the State House as a strong conservative and a "watchdog for the taxpayer," and wish him many days of health and happiness in his retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commend the Honorable Lewis R. Vaughn, of Greenville County, for twenty years of distinguished service in the General Assembly, upon the occasion of his retirement from the South Carolina Senate, and express deep appreciation for his contributions to our State, to the General Assembly, and to his constituents.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable Lewis R. Vaughn.
