A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE HONORABLE JOHN D. HAWKINS, OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY, FOR HIS TWELVE YEARS OF OUTSTANDING AND DEDICATED SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE SENATE, AND TO WISH HIM SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the Honorable John D. Hawkins, of Spartanburg County, has represented the citizens of Spartanburg County for twelve years with diligence, distinction, and integrity; and

Whereas, born in Spartanburg on March 2, 1968, to the late David O. and Doretha A. Hawkins, John Hawkins earned a Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude from Wofford College in 1991 as a Phi Beta Kappa and then graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1994; and

Whereas, on February 9, 1991, he married his beloved wife Andrea, and they have two fine daughters, Jennifer Lauren and Haley Pamela; and

Whereas, John Hawkins served as a law clerk for Justice of the Supreme Court of South Carolina, the Honorable E. C. Burnett III, from 1994 to 1996 before entering the private practice of law; and

Whereas, he first served Spartanburg in the House of Representatives from 1997 to 2000, where he was chairman of the House Freshman Caucus from 1997 to 1998, before he entered the Senate in 2001; and

Whereas, during his service in the Senate, John Hawkins, using the insight he gained as a result of being a skilled trial lawyer, always fought for the hardworking citizen trying to protect everyday South Carolinians against the abuses of corporate or institutional power or neglect; and

Whereas, Senator Hawkins has further served the State as a member of the South Carolina Air National Guard from 1986 to 1987 and of the South Carolina Army National Guard since 1987. In his current assignment he is a major with the Judge Advocate General Corps; and

Whereas, he received the Outstanding Legislator of the Year Award in 2001 from the South Carolina Victim's Assistance Network and The Palmetto Patriot Award in 2002 from the Gun Owners of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate will miss the keen insight and intelligence that John D. Hawkins has brought to the Senate, and especially his skills as a debater, and wish him much continued success in his private life as he leaves public service. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commend the Honorable John D. Hawkins, of Spartanburg County, for his twelve years of outstanding and dedicated service as a member of the General Assembly, upon his retirement from the Senate, and wish him success and happiness in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable John D. Hawkins.
