HONORING THE MEMORY OF HARRIET MCBRYDE JOHNSON, OF CHARLESTON COUNTY, CIVIL AND DISABILITY RIGHTS ADVOCATE, ATTORNEY, AND AUTHOR, AND ACCEPTING HER LIFE-LONG CHALLENGE TO RECOGNIZE THE DIGNITY OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.
Whereas, Harriet McBryde Johnson died June 4, 2008, at the age of 50, at her home in Charleston; and
Whereas, her death is mourned by family, friends, and strangers alike for the void it leaves in the nationally recognized and fierce advocacy for the disabled; and
Whereas, born with a congenital neuromuscular disease in Laurinburg, North Carolina, in 1957 to college professors David and Ada Johnson, she is survived by her sister Beth and brothers Eric, McBryde, and Ross; and
Whereas, she is also survived by her legacy of "successful militancy through wry humor, formidable intellect, and a near regal grace", born of her demands for, and commitment to, dignity for herself and others with disabilities; and
Whereas, this remarkable woman also spent her endless passion as a history making attorney, representing clients with disability issues, and as a prolific author, writing books and articles focusing on the civil rights of the disabled; and
Whereas, the State of South Carolina is proud to recognize her esteemed role in the enhanced awareness we now have because of her life -- that the disabled "take constraints that no one else would choose and build rich and satisfying lives within them.". Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, honor the memory of Harriet McBryde Johnson, of Charleston County, civil and disability rights advocate, attorney, and author, and accept her life-long challenge to recognize the dignity of people with disabilities.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Harriet McBryde Johnson.
