A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE HOPEWELL AME CHURCH UPON THE OCCASION OF THE DEDICATION OF ITS NEW SANCTUARY ON SATURDAY, JUNE 21, 2008.

Whereas, the Senate is pleased to hear that at eleven o'clock on the morning of Saturday, June 21, 2008, the historic Hopewell AME Church will dedicate its new sanctuary, the latest of several worship edifices utilized by the church over the years; and

Whereas, Hopewell AME Church, originally known as New Hopewell Church, has a long and distinguished history that extends back to pre-Civil War days when the slaves of Oaks Plantation were permitted to have services in the basement of Union Methodist Episcopal Church. With the freeing of the slaves came the birth of Hopewell; and

Whereas, located near the Georgetown-Williamsburg County line, which was formerly called Britton's Ferry Road, the first sanctuary was a log building erected on an acre of land purchased for one dollar in 1880. Further acreage was acquired a few years later; and

Whereas, after its founding, Hopewell became, as time went on, the "Mother Church" for the Williamsburg Circuit of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; and

Whereas, in its present celebration of the new sanctuary, the church is rejoicing over the facility's space for Christian education, as well as that for corporate worship; and

Whereas, the Senate takes great pleasure in congratulating Hopewell AME Church on the completion of its new sanctuary, and prays it will be a blessing to the congregation and afford glory to God for many years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Hopewell AME Church upon the occasion of the dedication of its new sanctuary on Saturday, June 21, 2008.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Hopewell AME Church.
