TO CONGRATULATE STEPHEN H. SMITH OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY UPON RECEIVING THE AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION'S PRESTIGIOUS WENDELL MAYES, JR., MEDAL FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE IN THE CAUSE OF DIABETES AND TO HONOR HIS NUMEROUS ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN PROMOTING DIABETES HEALTH.
Whereas, Stephen H. Smith of Spartanburg County marked a milestone in his long-standing and dedicated service to diabetes advocacy by receiving the American Diabetes Association's prestigious Wendell Mayes, Jr., Medal for outstanding service in the cause of diabetes; and
Whereas, the American Diabetes Association announced that Mr. Smith's contributions to the diabetes community and dedication to diabetes advocacy directly support the ADA's mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people living with diabetes; and
Whereas, Mr. Smith has made extensive contributions to the ADA by serving at every level in the organization. He has chaired numerous committees and boards, including the Strategic Directions Task Force, the Task Force on Children with Diabetes in Schools, and the Government Relations Committee. In 2001, he was named the ADA's National Chair of the Board of Directors, its first chairman from South Carolina; and
Whereas, his commitment to the ADA is far-reaching as a guiding force in the ADA's organizational evolution and as a published author of "The Future of Advocacy", which has provided the framework for the ADA's current advocacy structure; and
Whereas, Mr. Smith has been a tireless warrior for research funding and healthcare coverage by providing testimony to congressional committees and helping to secure passage of critical diabetes health insurance legislation in South Carolina which was recognized as the most progressive in the United States; and
Whereas, outside of his meritorious service to the ADA, Mr. Smith was also a member of the Diabetes Research Working Group which developed a blueprint for diabetes funding at the National Institute for Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Disease at the National Institutes of Health. While serving on this group, he testified before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Health in Washington, D.C.; and
Whereas, following his service as the ADA's Chair of the Board of Directors from 2001 to 2002, Mr. Smith was honored with the Charles H. Best Medal for distinguished service; and
Whereas, Mr. Smith is continuing his distinguished service to diabetes health as the current chairman of the ADA's Advocacy Leadership Council, promoting diabetes health at the grassroots level with individuals who have personal influence with members of Congress and their staff. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Stephen H. Smith of Spartanburg County upon receiving the American Diabetes Association's prestigious Wendell Mayes, Jr., Medal for outstanding service in the cause of diabetes and to honor his numerous accomplishments in promoting diabetes health.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Stephen H. Smith.
