TO CONGRATULATE ASHLEY ZAIS OF NEWBERRY UPON BEING NAMED MISS SOUTH CAROLINA USA 2007 AND TO EXTEND HER EVERY BEST WISH WHEN SHE REPRESENTS SOUTH CAROLINA AT THE MISS USA CONTEST IN MARCH 2007 IN HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were pleased to learn that during the legislative interim at the Miss South Carolina USA pageant held in Charleston in November 2006, Ashley Derham Zais of Newberry was named Miss South Carolina USA 2007; and

Whereas, this talented and beautiful nineteen year-old is a graduate of Newberry High School and is currently a senior at Wofford College in Spartanburg. She is the daughter of Newberry College President Dr. Mitchell M. Zais and Mrs. Zais, the former Susan Fincher; and

Whereas, Ashley will graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and a minor in religion. She is also a professional model and has modeled with Elite in Atlanta, Avenue One in Tokyo, and Millie Lewis in Columbia; and

Whereas, Ashley has been involved in many activities at Wofford College including student government, Wofford Ambassadors, the women's choir and singers, Campus Outreach, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, intramural soccer, and her social sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta. She was also on the orientation staff, Wofford College Deans List, and was on the homecoming court. She is a recipient of the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship, the highest academic scholarship awarded in this State; and

Whereas, she also is a former Miss Newberry High School and enjoys reading, writing, water skiing, swimming, snow skiing, volunteering, and traveling. She has lived in the states of Washington, Georgia, Kansas, California, Washington, D. C., and now South Carolina. She also has lived in several foreign countries including three years in Panama, a summer in Tokyo, and a semester abroad in Barcelona, Spain; and

Whereas, South Carolina is fortunate to have her represent our State in the Miss USA Pageant. As an ambassador for South Carolina and an advocate and a role model for young women, she will have the opportunity to speak about issues affecting young women today, such as healthy lifestyles, eating disorders, and self esteem; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, would like to extend heartiest congratulations to her upon being crowned Miss South Carolina USA 2007 and wish her the very best of luck in the upcoming Miss USA contest. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives congratulate Ashley Zais of Newberry upon being named Miss South Carolina USA 2007 and extend her every best wish when she represents South Carolina at the Miss USA contest in March 2007 in Hollywood, California.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ashley Zais.
