TO RECOGNIZE PASTOR NORRIS TURNER FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TOWARD PRESERVING THE HERITAGE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN GOSPEL MUSIC, SPREADING KNOWLEDGE AND LOVE OF THIS MUSICAL TREASURE, AND CREATING NEW AUDIENCES FOR ITS ENJOYMENT.
Whereas, gospel music is an integral part of the cultural fiber of South Carolina and the United States and, more particularly, of the African American community; and
Whereas, the history of gospel music and the African American community are interwoven in such a way that the music has often reflected the struggles, challenges, and victories of the African American community; and
Whereas, as part of the gospel music industry for more than sixty years, Pastor Norris Turner, who has recorded and performed with many groups and appeared on Job Man Caravan, is a minister and gospel singer and writer known and loved by several generations; and
Whereas, an artist whose fans claim numerous recordings of his among their favorites, Pastor Norris Turner is perhaps best known for "Stand Up for Jesus"; and
Whereas, although blessed to call Troy home, Pastor Norris Turner performs well beyond its boundaries, possessing a well-deserved national reputation enhanced by his more than fourteen albums, eight-track tapes, and singles, all of them collectors' items. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize Pastor Norris Turner for his outstanding contribution toward preserving the heritage of African American gospel music, spreading knowledge and love of this musical treasure, and creating new audiences for its enjoyment.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Pastor Norris Turner.
